From Silas, our Circuit Superintendent:
A longer one this week - and it's for next week too as I'm not around for part of the week.
Throughout the centuries, people have protested against technological advancement on the grounds that jobs will be lost and poverty will increase. In the 19th century The Luddites protested the usage of certain types of automated machinery owing to their concerns over worker pay, labour savings, child labour, working conditions, and output quality. There were also the Captain Swing Rioters - agricultural workers across southern and eastern England who destroyed labour-saving machinery that threatened to strip them of winter employment and worsen rural poverty. Today we have concerns about the rise of Artificial Intelligence taking jobs away from people.
Whilst the Bible obviously doesn’t speak specifically about AI, it does say that Humans are made in the "image and likeness of God" (Genesis 1:26–27), which gives people the capacity for creativity, innovation, and dominion over the Earth. AI is a product of this God-given human intelligence. However, Scripture also emphasises responsibility in how we build and use tools that affect communities. Passages warning against dishonest scales or shortcuts (such as Leviticus 19:6 or Luke 4:3) highlight that technology can cause injustice, spread misinformation, or deceive large groups if used without care.
So this week's question is -
""AI - a good thing or not?""
On Sunday afternoon the Moderator travelled to the most northerly church in the Synod - Howard Memorial Church in Cardington, just south of Bedford to lead their Harvest service. It is a joint URC/Methodist Church with worship led by a combination of organ, guitar, cello and violin. Although not a large church, it is vibrant and very active. Almost 40 people gathered for the service including 7 children. The congregation welcomed wider family and friends from nearby churches for the celebration. The Moderator also baked some bread to share in the service.
